Reporting to the Director of Automation, this individual will work to implement a machine-learning based control system in Solugen’s BioForge. In addition, this individual will provide process engineering support to the automation team and assist in Solugen’s Pilot Plant. This is a hands-on role where the individual’s initiative, engineering prowess, energy level and creativity will make a substantial impact on the company. This is a three-month summer internship with the potential for long-term employment at Solugen.

Key Outcomes

  • Work with Solugen’s Machine Learning controls partner to design, implement, and optimize next-generation controls in Solugen’s BioForge
  • Assist with equipment design & selection, such as choosing instrumentation and assembling control loop logic
  • Assist with pilot plant operations, including preparing reagents, operating pilot equipment (reactors, separators, and ancillary equipment) and analyze results

Key Competencies

Job Specific

  • Experience with Physics-Informed Machine Learning required
  • Experience with Model-Predictive Control required
  • MATLAB or Python skills are required
  • Experience in a plant setting is strongly desired
  • Attention to detail and organization
  • Commitment to safe workplace goals and practices that ensure operational integrity, including compliance with all regulatory policies and procedures.
  • Comfortable following safety protocols and wearing personal protective equipment—including hard hats, gloves, earplugs, and respirators--in work zones
  • Good familiarity with Office products as well as a general level of comfort with online communication and work management platforms such as Dropbox, Google Doc, and Slack
  • Analytical approach to problem solving, with a focus on managing a team environment with attention to results and a sense of urgency

  • BS Degree in Chemical Engineering Required
  • Pursuing a PhD in Chemical Engineering with an emphasis in Physics-Informed Machine Learning
